Stunner and Babongile Sikhonjwa Honoured as Zim Hip Hop Awards Spotlight Cultural Pioneers
The Zim Hip Hop Awards are turning the spotlight back to the architects of the culture, honouring Stunner, born Desmond Tambawoga Chideme, as the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and celebrating the late Babongile Sikhonjwa for his foundational role in shaping Zimbabwean hip-hop.
Set for December 12, 2025 at Zimbali Gardens, the glamorous event will go beyond glitz and lights; it will serve as a powerful celebration of the pioneers who built Zimbabwe’s hip-hop industry.
Stunner is widely recognised as one of the pioneers of Urban Grooves in Zimbabwe. He rose to fame in the early 2000s when the genre began dominating the local entertainment scene. Before stepping behind the microphone, Stunner began his artistic journey as a choreographer and dancer, later breaking into mainstream music with chart-topping hits such as “Godo,” “Team Hombe,” and “Dhafu Korera.”
Event Director Aldrian “Beefy” Harrison told CloutBase that Stunner’s honour was “long overdue,” emphasising that his consistency and influence have made him one of the few artists whose presence has defined the genre for nearly two decades. Harrison noted that Stunner has uplifted countless artists along his journey, making him not just a hitmaker but a pillar of the movement.
“It was long overdue, everyone knows the contribution Stunner has made to hip hop and Zim music as a whole, and he is still standing… he has been the most consistent the genre has ever seen and has uplifted many across his journey,” said Harrison.
Sikhonjwa’s recognition, though posthumous, reflects the undeniable role he played—especially in Bulawayo. Harrison noted that many of today’s hip-hop voices, platforms and ideas draw directly from Sikhonjwa’s mentorship, advocacy and unwavering support for the culture.
“Babongile has held the hands of many hip hop heads in Zimbabwe including myself. Bulawayo hip hop would not be where it is if he had never played a role,” Harrison said.
Beyond celebrating pioneers, the awards are using these honours to send a message to the new generation: growth demands reinvention. Harrison highlighted that while times and sounds evolve, consistency remains “the heartbeat of artistic longevity,” a lesson the industry’s heavyweights have proved over time.
He also stressed that the awards’ selections are shaped by year-round engagement. The committee’s research team tracks emerging talent, cultural trends, and artist impact throughout the year—one of the reasons many breakout acts can trace their first national spotlight back to the awards.
“The awards committee has a research team, one that is active throughout the year. Through activations and interactions we are constantly in touch with the genre. This is why we always discover new talent through the platform, and many artists have come to be known because of the awards.”
Harrison encouraged young creatives to value passion over hype. While talent matters, he said Sikhonjwa’s career shows that dedication, authenticity and love for the craft are what truly sustain artists.
He also reflected on the importance of honouring originators in a fast-growing industry. Even as the genre expands globally, he said, hip-hop must remain grounded.
“Charity begins at home. Despite growth you still have to respect your parents and where you come from—same applies to music.”
Fans can expect the December ceremony to feature powerful tributes and storytelling woven into the programme, as the awards team is crafting a show designed to reflect the journey, impact and spirit of both honourees.
Harrison added that the awards remain committed to mentorship, emphasising collaboration across generations as the engine that keeps the culture fresh, evolving and united.
