Ruuniq, born Rumbidzai Mutasa, is a Zimbabwean singer-songwriter known for her powerful blend of reggae, afropop, and jazzy African melodies. Raised in the tranquil hills of Mutasa, her musical journey began in childhood, singing in church and later writing original songs that set her apart early in life. She entered the studio professionally in 2012
Her stage name, Ruuniq, represents her identity as “the unique Rumbi”—a reflection of her distinct style, vibrant personality, and artistic individuality. “There are many Rumbis,” she says, “but I’m Ru who is unique.”
Ruuniq gained national attention in 2022 with the socially conscious anthem “Manake”, released under the Voice2Rep platform. The song, rich in emotion and cultural depth, showcased her voice as a vessel for both beauty and activism. She followed up with “Red Roses” and featured on “Seka Urema” by Savage—a collaboration that landed her on Zimbabwe’s radio top 20 charts.

She has performed on prestigious stages such as Shoko Festival 2022 and lit up events like Hustler’s Market, with standout moments alongside artists like Solutiongc. Her music explores themes of love, gospel, and social consciousness, drawing spontaneous inspiration. For example, her track Fambai Neni was written and recorded entirely in-studio in the moment.
Ruuniq’s sound is influenced by powerful Zimbabwean voices including Nutty O, Victor Kunonga, Cecil, and the soul-stirring Feli Nandi. Her approach reflects a deep commitment to authenticity, spiritual growth, and cultural storytelling.
Beyond the Stage
Currently training to teach the Mind Body Spirit (MBS) program, Ruuniq is passionate about education, self-discovery, and creative empowerment. She’s also exploring interests in fashion and aims to expand her personal brand through music, style, and mentorship.
Her dream is to uplift the Zimbabwean flag globally, give voice to the voiceless, and leave behind a legacy of love, empowerment, and healing through music. “If I can create a new African sound along the way, that would be beautiful,” she says.
