Meet Jah Lee Wasu: The Mutare-Born Creative Blending Law, Music and Storytelling

By Inertia Ayvor Moyo| CloutBase | Mutare – March 4, 2026

Emerging from the streets of Hobhouse in Mutare, Jah Lee Wasu, born Justine Maguta, is steadily building a name for himself as one of Zimbabwe’s rising multi-talented creatives, balancing dancehall and hip-hop music with poetry, writing, acting, and academic excellence.

More than just a recording artist, Jah Lee Wasu represents a new generation of creatives refusing to be boxed into a single identity. His artistic journey stretches across multiple disciplines, reflecting a creative philosophy rooted in storytelling and self-expression.

The stage name itself carries personal and spiritual meaning. According to the artist, “the name Jah Lee is a combination of two names, Justin and Leon.” He also connects it to biblical history, referencing Jahleel, a progenitor of one of the twelve tribes of Israel mentioned in Numbers 26:26, highlighting the spiritual foundation behind his artistic identity.

Balancing Law and Art

Away from music stages and creative spaces, Wasu is pursuing a demanding academic path in the legal profession — a journey he says complements rather than competes with his artistry.

Speaking during an interview, he explained:

“My school work and my artistic projects are not really separate things I have to juggle, they actually feed into each other. My academic studies become the inspiration or thematic backbone of my art. Of course, there are times when deadlines clash and it gets intense and, on such days, it’s less about balance and more about integration.”

This fusion between academia and creativity has become central to his identity, shaping both his lyrical themes and artistic direction.

Recognition and Growing Momentum

Jah Lee Wasu’s rising profile has already earned industry recognition. He was honoured as Best New Artist in Manicaland at the Manicaland Creative Awards in 2021, marking an early milestone in his career.

His visibility expanded further when ZBC TV broadcast his music videos consistently between February and April 2025, introducing his sound to wider national audiences.

Beyond recordings, Wasu has remained active on live stages, representing Great Zimbabwe University, where he is regarded as a creative ambassador for the institution. Among his standout career moments are performances at the Masvingo Cup Clash 2025, collaborations with Mad Viper, and appearances at events attended by the Head of State.

Influence-wise, the artist cites Winky D as a major inspiration, praising the musician’s work ethic, consistency, and professionalism as qualities he hopes to emulate throughout his own journey.

What’s Next for Jah Lee Wasu?

Looking ahead, the Mutare-born creative promises an ambitious rollout of projects across different artistic forms.

“Oo yeah, this year I’m promising fireworks… trust me! I have an EP I’m working on called Great Rabbi, a short film titled ‘Pamela the Village Girl’ from a novel I wrote and it will be dropping around June. There is also a whole lot more which I cannot reveal at the moment,” he said.

He concluded with a message directed at young creatives pursuing their dreams:

“Put your faith in God, remember, everything has been predestined before the foundation of the world (Romans 8:28–30). Believe in yourself, and be consistent.”

Jah Lee Wasu stands as an example of a new wave of artists blending intellect, spirituality, and artistry — proving that ambition can thrive both in lecture halls and on stage.
