In a time marked by economic uncertainty, cultural shifts, and growing pressure on young creatives, the return of the Bokola Film Festival feels less like a simple arts event and more like a statement of survival. Set for May 30 at Studio Moto in Belgravia, Harare, this year’s edition arrives with a bold and deeply reflective theme: Hold The Line: Between Collapse and Becoming.

More than just a catchy slogan, the theme captures the emotional and social reality many young Africans are navigating today — a generation constantly adapting to instability while still trying to create, dream, and build. And for Bokola, that tension is exactly where storytelling begins.

The festival, organised by Magamba Network, has steadily evolved into one of Zimbabwe’s most important spaces for independent cinema and alternative cultural expression. Since its inception, Bokola has become known for amplifying raw, fearless storytelling from emerging African filmmakers, particularly those working outside mainstream industry systems.

This year’s edition promises an immersive blend of cinema and youth culture. From 12pm to 7pm, audiences can expect a packed programme featuring short films, experimental screenings, music videos, exhibitions, live DJ sets, and a dedicated kids’ zone designed to make the festival accessible to families and younger audiences. The experience will then spill into the night with Bokola On Fire, an after-party hosted by Events On Fire.

For Festival Director Ska Sebata, the festival is less about offering solutions and more about creating space for reflection. “The festival is not positioned as an answer, but as a space to sit with questions,” Sebata said. “What does it mean to hold on when things are breaking? What does it mean to create when the future feels unstable?”

That philosophy appears to sit at the heart of Bokola’s growing appeal. At a time when Zimbabwe’s creative industry continues to fight for funding, visibility, and infrastructure, the festival’s insistence on accessibility — charging just US$1 entry — speaks directly to the communities it hopes to serve.

The return of the Bokola Future of Film Award, supported by Accountability Lab Zimbabwe, further reinforces the festival’s commitment to nurturing the next wave of African filmmakers. Emerging creatives selected for the award will receive both recognition and financial support to continue developing their craft.
