From the vibrant creative streets of Bulawayo emerges a young multi-talented artist who is steadily carving his name across several artistic disciplines. Known as Moxxy Jay, the teenage creative born Simba Matyaura is quickly becoming one of the city’s promising young voices in music, visual art and creative production.

Moxxy Jay describes himself as an artist who lives and breathes creativity. His work stretches across music, poetry, creative design, modelling, contemporary dance and pencil art. He is also a skilled instrumentalist who plays traditional Zimbabwean instruments such as the Mbira and Marimba. Despite still navigating high school life, the young creative has already begun building a diverse artistic portfolio that blends visual storytelling with performance and design.

The Meaning Behind the Name

According to the artist, the name Moxxy Jay is intentionally symbolic. The idea comes from the word moxie, which represents boldness, courage and confidence, while “Jay” reflects individuality and a personal signature style.

For him, the brand represents ambition, originality and the power of art to mirror real life experiences, youth culture and identity.

“Moxxy Jay isn’t just about making visuals, music or concepts. It’s about creating worlds, moods and narratives people can connect with,” he said.

His creative inspiration often draws from everyday Zimbabwean life, street culture, futuristic themes and personal experiences, turning ordinary moments into expressive artistic pieces.

Balancing School and Creativity

Managing both school and a growing creative career can be demanding, but Moxxy says discipline and passion help him maintain the balance.

“It really comes down to discipline, strategic time management and passion. School is a priority and art is a passion so I make wise use of my free time, late nights, busy weekends and much needed breaks here and there.”

Achievements and Creative Milestones

Even at a young age, Moxxy Jay has already reached several milestones. Some of his pencil art pieces have attracted attention from collectors in Germany, while others have received recognition from the Bulawayo National Gallery.

In music, he has performed at platforms such as the Bulawayo Arts Festival and the talent showcase DreamStar Zimbabwe. His music has also received airplay on Skyz Metro FM, Khulumani FM and NUST FM.

His journey into modelling began early when he won the Mr Msiteli crown at Msiteli High School at the age of 14, an achievement that marked the beginning of his modelling path.

His passion for fashion later led to the creation of Wagwan Apparels, a clothing brand that is slowly gaining traction in Bulawayo’s youth fashion scene.

Beyond artistic performance, Moxxy Jay has also built skills in graphic design and visual production. His work has landed him marketing and creative content contracts with several businesses including Halisi Grill at Imbali Mall, Grand Arcade Restaurant, RocoMamas, Kamandazi Restaurant and Tables and Pins Restaurant, where he produces photography, videography and promotional visuals.

What to Expect Next

Looking ahead, the young creative is expanding into cinematic storytelling. One of his upcoming projects is a short drama titled “Time Up”, which he describes as a dark and emotional story driven by symbolic visual storytelling.

Another developing project titled “NGABE” explores school life realities and social issues affecting young people. The concept combines cinematic cover art, dramatic posters and film-style promotional visuals.

Alongside these film projects, Moxxy Jay continues developing artist cover art, music visuals, luxury-style posters, fashion branding concepts under Wagwan Apparels and collaborative content with dancers and media crews.

He is also seeking sponsorship opportunities that would allow him to travel to Germany, connect with other creatives and expand his work onto international platforms.

Message to Young Creatives

Drawing from his own journey, Moxxy Jay offered advice to young creatives seeking to establish themselves in the industry.

“I’d say believe in yourself early, even before others do. Don’t wait until everything is perfect. Start with what you have. Protect your education but never abandon your gift. Learn from criticism, stay consistent and avoid comparing your journey to others. Pressure is part of growth, let it sharpen you instead of breaking you. Most importantly stay true to your vision and remember why you started.”

For years, Bulawayo has been known as one of Zimbabwe’s cultural capitals, producing generations of musicians, visual artists and performers who shape the country’s creative landscape. Young creatives like Moxxy Jay represent a new wave of artists blending multiple disciplines while using digital media and modern storytelling to push their work beyond local borders.
