Alick Macheso Pulls Out of South Africa’s Silala Festival Over Security Concerns

By CloutBase | Harare July 12, 2026

Sungura music legend Alick Macheso has withdrawn from this year’s Silala Festival in South Africa, citing the current security situation and ongoing tensions affecting foreign nationals.

The announcement comes amid heightened concern over protests and anti-immigration tensions in South Africa, which have already sparked debate within Zimbabwe’s entertainment industry in recent weeks.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Macheso said the difficult decision was made with the safety of his band, crew and supporters in mind.

“We regret to inform you Mafunzi wa Mishumo, Varungu vedu, Amakhiwa, our fans, supporters, and festival attendees that we are unable to participate in this year’s Silala Festival,” the statement read.

The musician revealed that all contractual and logistical arrangements for the performance had already been completed and that his team was fully prepared to travel before the security situation forced a change of plans.

“Just for the record, ALL contractual and logistical arrangements had been completed, and we were fully prepared to attend the event. However, the safety and well-being of everyone involved remains our highest priority,” Macheso said.

He thanked the festival organisers and fans for their understanding, expressing hope that he would be able to perform at a future edition of the event once conditions improve.

Rather than fuelling division, Macheso used the opportunity to call for peace, unity and mutual respect across the region.

“We encourage everyone to promote peace, unity, tolerance, and mutual respect during these challenging times. Music transcends borders, and together we can build stronger and more inclusive communities,” the statement added.

Macheso’s withdrawal follows growing sensitivity around cross-border entertainment events, with several artists and promoters facing increased scrutiny as tensions surrounding the treatment of foreign nationals in South Africa continue to dominate public discussion.

There has been no indication from organisers whether a replacement act will be announced for this year’s Silala Festival.
