HARARE – Zimbabwe’s longest-running urban culture festival, Shoko Festival, is set to celebrate its 15th anniversary with a landmark Comedy Night headlined by internationally acclaimed comedian King Kandoro, underscoring the event’s growing role as both a cultural and economic force in the creative industries.

The festival, scheduled for September 25 at Harare Gardens, is positioning its comedy showcase as a central feature of the anniversary edition. King Kandoro, born Mukudzei Majoni, will make a highly anticipated return to the Zimbabwean stage, bringing with him the momentum of an international tour and a string of sold-out performances at some of the country’s largest venues. His reappearance reflects both Shoko’s ability to nurture local talent and the broader global recognition of Zimbabwean comedy.

Festival Director Samm Farai Monro, better known as Comrade Fatso, emphasized this point, noting that Kandoro’s career was partly shaped by platforms such as Shoko and Magamba TV. He added that Kandoro’s triumphant return as a headliner demonstrates the festival’s role in building sustainable creative pathways.

“Our Comedy Night line up is a reflection of the legacy we have been building over 15 years as Shoko Festival,” said Monro. “King Kandoro is an example of that legacy as he grew his comedy career through platforms created by Magamba TV and Shoko and is now one of Zimbabwe’s biggest comedians. He returns triumphantly to Shoko as a headliner and this shows our commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists in Zimbabwe who speak truth to power. Kandoro will be joined on stage by an amazing group of comedians. It’s gonna be a hilarious night!”

The 2025 line-up reflects this blend of legacy and fresh energy. Kenyan satirist Justine Wanda, known for her incisive political and social commentary, brings an international perspective that complements the local roster. She joins Zimbabwean comedians including Mike Chipere, Munya, and Mbongeni Ignatius Ndlovu, whose diverse styles highlight the depth of the country’s comedy scene. This mix positions Shoko as a regional hub for cultural collaboration, fostering cross-border artistic exchanges at a time when the African creative economy is gaining international attention.

Beyond its cultural value, Shoko Festival generates measurable economic impact.
