Kay Gee 40: A Voice from Mutare with a Mic, a Message, and a Guitar

Born: Trevor Rufaro Goustino
Hometown: Dangamvura, Mutare, Zimbabwe

Kay Gee 40 is not your typical Zimbabwean rapper. He’s a genre-bending artist who raps, sings, and plays guitar — often at the same time — a rare blend in the country’s hip hop scene. As a producer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Kay Gee 40 has spent the last decade building a brand that stands for creativity, motivation, and fearless independence.

His journey began in the streets of Mutare, recording underground tracks with local producer C Bleach. But his real introduction to the mainstream came in 2013, when his debut single “Rudo Rwevaviri” (featuring Nyasha Timbe and produced by Anonzi Xndr) earned radio spins on Star FM and ZiFM Stereo.

The name Kay Gee 40 is rooted in family and faith. “Kay Gee” comes from his surnames Kanjera and Goustino, while 40 is drawn from biblical symbolism — a number of completion, transformation, and spiritual testing.

Breakthrough & Career Highlights

Kay Gee 40’s biggest hit to date is the anthem “Sterek” featuring Mr Noxa — a song that became so popular across Zimbabwean radio that it inspired a signature Sterek perfume line. Other notable tracks include:

  • Chitima Cherudo
  • Ndiyerese with DJ Shugeta and Mr Noxa
  • 6 O’Clock featuring Trae Yung
  • Apa Tione
  • Zvaendwa

Though not signed to any label, he runs his own imprint, 40 Music Entertainment, alongside his brother Secure. He’s also the face of Herbal Supremacy as a brand ambassador and is relaunching the Sterek Perfume line — showing his evolution from artist to entrepreneur.

Sound & Influence

His sound? A fusion of boom bap, melodic hip hop, and acoustic soul — all underscored by deep lyrical content and classic 90s influence. He draws heavy inspiration from local pioneers like Mau Mau (who inspired his use of Shona in rap) and Fortune Muparutsa, his first mentor. Internationally, his artistic compass is guided by Nas and Tupac — lyricists known for depth, poetry, and purpose.

“Music is spiritual,” he says. “Some songs feel like they were handed to me. You have to be tuned into the right frequency.”

Message & Legacy

Kay Gee 40’s music speaks for the underdog. He’s a storyteller of the streets, a poet of love, and a voice for the voiceless. Whether he’s dropping a motivational track or a heartfelt love song, his tone remains positive, reflective, and deeply human.

As a performer, he has graced top platforms like HIFA, Unplugged, and Shoko Festival, sharing the stage with Shekhinah, Tariro NeGitare, and Blessing Shumba. He’s also the original mind behind YGT acoustic sessions and has made countless appearances on ZTV, ZiFM, Power FM, Star FM, and National FM.

The Story Behind the Sound

When his parents divorced, young Trevor turned inward — finding comfort in poetry, which later morphed into rap. “I didn’t have anyone to talk to. Music became my therapy.” Moving from Mutare to Harare with nothing but guitars and a dream, he rebuilt from the ground up — performing for strangers and recording wherever he could. His first major break came when Tich Mataz, who once posed for a photo with a young Kay Gee, later asked him for one after Sterek blew up.

Looking Ahead

In the next five to ten years, Kay Gee 40 wants to stay relevant, make timeless music, and become a cultural symbol in Zimbabwe and beyond. “I want to create a sound of my own. What Tanto Wavie did with trap sungura — I want that kind of impact, only in my own lane.”

He also aims to inspire the next generation of Zimbabwean musicians to be fearless in their craft, spiritual in their approach, and proud of their roots.

“Romans 8:28 — All things work together for those who love the Lord.”
“Thank you for the support. Expect more great music and visuals.” – Kay Gee 40
