Renowned Zimbabwean hip-hop artist Malcolm Mufunde has announced his retirement from music to pursue a career in filmmaking.

Mufunde revealed his decision to step away from music after two decades of artistic expression. With a poignant reflection, he shared that his journey through hip-hop has been a sanctuary, a cathartic and therapeutic outlet that has allowed him to confront challenges such as depression and hardship.

“Music became my sanctuary a cathartic and therapeutic outlet that helped me navigate the murk of depression and hardship,” Mufunde said.

“Walking away from hip-hop hasn’t been an easy decision. It’s been my steadfast companion in dark times, and now, ironically, it feels like I’m leaving it behind when it might need me the most—or so my friends keep telling me,” He added.

Mufunde acknowledged that the art form has been central to his life, shaping not only his career but also his personal relationships. “Nearly every thread in the fabric of my life is intertwined with rhyme.”

Despite the challenge of leaving behind the genre that has been his steadfast companion, Mufunde expressed a desire to focus on his lifelong passion for film. “While I can’t rule out a return [to music], my focus now lies elsewhere,” he said, emphasizing his intent to channel the same wit and honesty from his music into screenwriting.

Mufunde invited fans to join him on this new creative journey into arthouse cinema.

“While I can’t rule out a return, my focus now lies elsewhere. Film has been a lifelong passion, and it’s where I see myself for the next twenty years. My hope is to carry the same wit, raw emotion, and honesty from my music into my screenwriting. I’d love for you to join me on this journey. I know arthouse cinema isn’t what brought you to Malcom Mufunde, but if you’re willing to grow with me, it would mean the world,” said Mufunde

Acknowledging the scrutiny he has faced over the years, including criticism for his reclusive nature and avoidance of live performances, he humorously noted the irony of moving into film while shying away from the spotlight. “Eleni from Katikitiki has been pushing for me to do just one live show. While I can’t promise it’ll happen, the idea is exciting,”

He also reassured fans that the “Music That Made Us” series will continue. Mufunde expressed deep gratitude for the support he has received over the years, stating, “This journey wouldn’t have been possible without your support. I love you all. Thank you for everything, and see you at the movies!”
